We are constantly presented with opportunities to learn every single day. In every situation, there is something to be learned. The challenge lies in whether we recognize these opportunities or not. Sometimes, even when we do become aware of them, we lack the willingness or drive to extract the lessons they offer. These moments may seem ordinary, but they don’t happen twice. If we miss seeing and learning from them, we might miss out on a lot.
In my training sessions, I often tell participants that knowing is not enough to be powerful. The knowledge we acquire can only give us an edge when we apply it.
I may have missed plenty of learning opportunities, but I always do my best to grasp as many as I can. So, how do I make sure that these learning opportunities are well-spent?
I apply the lessons—especially my key takeaways—immediately.
Based on experience, delaying the application of newly acquired knowledge or skills often leads to forgetfulness. Applying the lessons helps with retention because the action reinforces the information.I relate lessons or theories to real-life situations.
Sometimes, lessons don’t make much sense when presented as plain concepts. To get their full essence, we need to identify with them and connect them to real experiences—past or present.I actively involve myself in the learning process.
When I have the chance to join training events, I make sure to overcome any hesitation and participate fully. I stay open to being coached in front of others, knowing that such opportunities are rare and valuable.I teach the lessons to others.
Sharing what I’ve learned is one of the best ways to retain knowledge. It not only helps me recall the content but also deepens my understanding as I apply it to different contexts.
There have been times when I’ve let valuable lessons slip by. It’s only when negative outcomes follow that I realize how important those lessons were. These experiences have taught me not to take learning for granted. Let’s constantly remind ourselves that we can learn from anything, anywhere, and anyone. We may have different roles and goals, but we can all grow when we learn from one another.
How about you? How do you learn best?
